Aug 05, 2020 · The Slot Canyon Trail is a fairly easy, well-marked hike with some narrow and rocky sections to navigate. Remember to bring water as there are no water fountains and little shade. This quick out-and-back takes you through a narrow slot canyon and ends at an overlook of the Monument's namesake teepee (or tent) shaped rock formations. Of the two main trails at this trailhead for Kasha-Katuwe Tent Tocks National Monument, the Cave Loop Trail is the more difficult, but is also the more picturesque. You'll start off hiking among the Monument's unique tent-shaped hoodoos along a sandy trail, and then enter a narrow, but beautiful, slot canyon. Be very mindful of thunderstorms when hiking in monsoon season (mid-June to mid-September) and do not hike if there is any danger of flash floods in the slot canyon. Exiting the slot canyon the area will open up more and you'll get closer to some massive hoodoos. The trail starts to climb from here for a short while until you reach the mesa top, dotted with gnarled old juniper trees. The 1.2 mile Cave Loop Trail winds across an open area at the foot of the cliffs, giving close-up views of cones, hoodoos, gullies and one cave-like alcove, while the more strenuous, and more varied Slot Canyon Trail forks off near the far side of the loop, following an initially very narrow ravine then climbing more steeply to a viewpoint above the formations. I arrived at about 7:15 on a Sunday morning, and there was plenty of parking. There are pit toilets and free maps at the trailhead.
